Challenges in Measuring Human Development: A Quantitative Overview

The webinar will focus on the significance of human development measurement and its relevance in transitioning economies. While the world is still battling the pandemic and the vulnerability of health systems has been exposed, it is time we rethink what development truly means in this changing global scenario. An overview of quantitative methods that are currently being employed with their advantages and drawbacks will be the overarching theme of this talk. Recent changes in the measurement methods of the human development index along with a summary of the proposed alternatives to the index will be covered in this talk.

Dr. Harini Swaminathan is an experienced researcher with a background in development economics. Her expertise lies in applying econometric methods to answer questions from the public health domain. Dr. Swaminathan has worked for the World Bank on projects related to child health. In her other roles she has conducted several causal inference based behavioral studies to assess impact of policy changes on population health.
