For this competition, our team wanted to build a dashboard that would help business owners gain a better understanding of how their restaurants are rated. We used a number of different visualizations and comparisons to understand which factors are the most important in determining how a restaurant will be rated. One important factor that is currently affecting the restaurant industry is how they responded to the pandemic. Due to COVID – 19, many restaurants were affected by mandates with respect to social distancing, capacity limits, and a lack of workers. Many consumers, especially in areas with high population density, began looking for restaurants that do pick up or deliver. According to market watch, food delivery services like Grubhub, DoorDash, and UberEats collectively increased revenue by 3 billion dollars from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020. Restaurants have had to adapt to empty dining rooms and people wanting to order food for delivery or pick up. Another factor that we were interested in researching was what effect, if any, does demographic of zip codes have on the overall rating of a restaurant. We also analyzed other factors such as Consumer Confidence over time, Median income by zip code, and inspection rating in each zip code over time. Finally, we completed a text analysis of the reviews from the sample dataset to understand what customer’s value most when rating a restaurant.
